Shark Island In Koh Tao, Thailand
Shark Island is a small, rocky island near the east coast of Koh Tao in Thailand, and it’s great for kayaking and snorkeling trips.
The name comes from the unique shape of the island, since it looks like a shark fin sticking out of the water.
This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!
Best Tours In Koh Tao
Kayaking To Shark Island
Shark Island is located a short distance from the south east side of Koh Tao island.
If you’ve ever been to places like Shark Bay or Sai Daeng Beach, then you’ve undoubtedly seen the rocky Shark Island sitting off in the distance.
The good news is that you can take a kayak out to Shark Island and get a closer look! The best place to start from is Sai Daeng Beach since it’s closest — only about 0.6 kilometers (less than 1/2 mile).
Kayaks and snorkel sets can be rented at Sai Daeng, and paddling out is pretty easy on a calm day (only takes about 15 minutes).
There’s a buoy on the island for tying down your kayak while you’re busy snorkeling, and the best snorkel spots are supposed to be in the rocks around the northwest end of the island.
The island may look like just a big clump of rocks, but it’s known as one of the top Koh Tao snorkeling spots, and it’s also a great place to get some drone shots!
Entrance Fees
Access is free as of 2020.
There’s no entry fee for visiting Shark Island or Sai Daeng Beach.

Where We Stayed
We stayed at a hotel called Aukotan Place in south Koh Tao. The price was $23 USD for a big double room with cold A/C, hot shower, and good WiFi.
This hotel includes free buffet breakfast even though it’s not mentioned on Booking.com. They also give a free daily transfer to and from the pier, and Sairee Beach, which was super handy, and they have scooter rentals for a good price.
The location of the hotel was perfect. It’s a 15 minute walk from Freedom Beach, Shark Bay, and John Suwan Viewpoint.
Prices may fluctuate from time to time, so just keep an eye out for a good deal.
