Conlosing a child is something that no parent should ever experience. Unfortunately, it’s quite common. According to the Mayo Clinic, between 10 and 20 percent of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, and that only accounts for women who knew they were pregnant before miscarrying.

For that reason, having a child after a previous loss takes on an entirely different level of depth. Such was the experience of Hunter and Hope Madden, a couple who recently celebrated the birth of their daughter after long struggles and miscarriages. The birth photos of The Maddens are going viral on the internet for the sheer depth of their emotional intensity – just try not to shed a tear while looking at these stunning portraits.

According to TODAY, Evelyn was born on March 11 and was the “rainbow baby,” the couple’s child born after the loss of a previous pregnancy. In the case of the Madden family, the new parent pair (who had gone through several rounds of fertility treatments in their attempt to conceive) had previously suffered two preterm miscarriages and a term loss later on an ultrasound of their son, Owen, revealed that he had not had a heartbeat.

Hunter Madden spoke of the anxiety the couple experienced leading up to Evelyn’s birth, with Dr. Evelyn’s “fearful and cautious optimism” about the impending pregnancy. Hope echoed his thoughts: “We prepared a lot for the worst…And I think the whole pregnancy went like that. We kept waiting until the floor fell below us in a split second.”

The joy and relief of finally seeing their daughter, born and healthy, is evident in all of Evelyn’s birth images, taken by Austin, Texas-based birth photographer Leilani Rogers. One portrait, Hunter holding his girl baby to his chest and crying, is particularly emotional. In the photo, Hunter’s tribute tattoo to his son – a tree with an anchor in the bottom – is evident as he hugs his daughter.

“I will never forget catching her while she was being born and the instant, unconditional love I had for her. That’s what you’re seeing in those pictures, my love for Hope and our daughter,” Hunter told TODAY. “I can’t believe I’ve been allowed to hold such a perfect thing, and I’m so grateful to finally be a father.”
