Koh Tao is famous for the scenic twin islands at Nang Yuan, but the less known John Suwan Viewpoint actually has some of the very best views.

At this viewpoint you can see almost the entire island of Koh Tao, with huge twin bays on either side of your field of vision.

This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!

John Suwan Viewpoint Hike

The hike to the top viewpoint weaves through a field of boulders and palm trees that makes you feel like you’re in a movie.

The climb to the top takes just 15-20 minutes, but it’s more strenuous and exhausting than you’d expect.

The footing is difficult in some places, but it’s not dangerous. There are ropes in place for you to hold onto in the harder sections.

Just be careful once you reach the top viewpoint, because it’s a high clearing and there are no safety railings.

There’s a great breeze at the top, and you’re treated with some epically fantastic panoramic views of Koh Tao island.

Entrance Fees

There’s a fee of 50 baht (~$2 USD) per person to access the viewpoint.

If you go in the morning before 9 AM, there’s usually no one to collect the fee and it’s possible to get in free.

How To Get There

John Suwan Viewpoint is on the south end of Koh Tao island.

It’s just a 15 minute drive from the main pier and tourist areas at Sairee Beach, and many places will rent you a scooter for 150 Baht ($5 USD) to explore the island all day.

Even better, our hotel in south Koh Tao was close enough to walk to the trailhead!

Big signs for the viewpoint are posted along the road, so if you follow these you can’t go wrong.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at a hotel called Aukotan Place in south Koh Tao. The price was $23 USD for a big double room with cold A/C, hot shower, and good WiFi.

This hotel includes free buffet breakfast even though it’s not mentioned on Booking.com. They also give a free daily transfer to and from the pier, and Sairee Beach, which was super handy, and they have scooter rentals for a good price.

The location of the hotel was perfect. It’s a 15 minute walk from Freedom Beach, Shark Bay, and John Suwan Viewpoint.

Prices may fluctuate from time to time, so just keep an eye out for a good deal.
